WA: Dead officer was trying to slow car down

Police Commissioner KARL O'CALLAGHAN says a Perth policeman .. killed by a car overnight
in Craigie .. was trying to flag the vehicle down.

He says the 31-year-old was putting an offender in a police van and another person
in an ambulance .. when he stepped off the road to hail a Holden Commodore approaching
the scene.

The officer was then hit by the car and instantly killed.

The driver returned a positive preliminary alcohol breath test .. but then showed under
the limit in a subsequent test at Joondalup police station.

Mr O'CALLAGHAN says the man is helping police with their inquiries.
