Fed: Ombudsman to investigate detention centre: Lawrence

CANBERRA, Dec 19 AAP - An investigation will be held into the treatment of detainees
at the Port Hedland detention centre, incoming Labor National President Carmen Lawrence
said today.

Dr Lawrence said the Commonwealth Ombudsman had agreed to her request that a probe
be conducted into allegations of mistreatment of detainees.

After a riot at the immigration detention centre earlier this month, Dr Lawrence said
she had been told detainees, including a 14-year-old boy, had been beaten by guards.

She also said there were reports detainees were held in an isolation wing in handcuffs
without food, water, mattresses or blankets.

The immigration department denied the claims.

Dr Lawrence said she hoped the investigation would reveal what had really happened
at Port Hedland.

"If there's been any abuse, if there's been any violence against the detainees and
the records haven't been destroyed, then that should be evident," she told ABC Radio.

"If there hasn't, I'll be amongst those who'll be very pleased to say that the allegations
were incorrect."

Details of the investigation were being sought from the Ombudsman's office.
